PITTSBURGH (AP) -Defenseman Ryan Whitney, the fifth overall pick in the 20002 NHL draft, has signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Whitney received the rookie maximum for his draft class, a $1.19 million, three-year deal but didn't push for incentives that might have kept him out of the NHL. The Penguins sent last year's No. 1 pick, goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, back to juniors this season partly to avoid paying him $3 million in contract incentives.

The 6-foot-4, 202-pound Whitney led Boston University with nine goals and 16 assists in 38 games. The Terriers finished 12-17-9 but advanced to the Hockey East semifinals.

Die Pens wollen sich im Bezug auf den Pick im Draft noch nicht in irgendeine Richtung festlegen. Es sei keinesfalls sicher das man Malkin nimmt.

Penguins head scout Greg Malone said the team isn't locked into a definite choice at No. 2. The Penguins' European scout, Mark Kelley, is highly impressed with Czech forward Rostislav Olesz, among others.

"There are people who will tell you he had would have been a top-five pick in last year's draft," Kelley said. "He's exciting, and if you remember (Jaromir) Jagr's eyes when he was younger, Olesz gets that same kind of possessed look."

Und das wird zu Malkin gesagt:

You went over wondering who the top '86-born European was," Kelley said. "Malkin just stood out, heads and tails above the others. As a centerman, he was unbelievable backing up the play at both ends of the ice."

Kelley also remembered Malkin flashing his scoring potential against a U.S. team in a February tournament.

"He scored the game-winning goal when he completely fooled the goalie in the shootout," Kelley said. "But probably more spectacularly, he was killing a penalty and intercepted a puck probably two feet off the goal line. With no space, he was able to tuck and pull it and put it in the open net. He has incredibly quick hands."

One concern with Malkin is that he has suffered a concussion in February each of the past two seasons. Dee Rizzo, director of player development for IMG Hockey, which represents Malkin, said the concussions "weren't as bad as everyone thought."

"He's playing in the (upcoming) Russian Elite League Championships," added Rizzo, who has scouted players for 13 years. "As far as the '86 kids are concerned, he's the most skilled player in the draft."

Werden wir mal abwarten und schauen wen die Pens dann ziehen werden.

Whitney ist ok. Hoffentlich ist er in der nHL so konstant wie im College. Aber sooo unglaublich viel erwarte ich mir auch nicht von ihm.

Das mit den Picks ist wirklich dumm für die Pens gelaufen,aber ich bin mir sicher,dass die mCaps Ovechkin ziehen werden,aber dieser andere Russe ist sicherlich auch kein Schlechter.

Der auslaufende Vertrag mit den russischen Vereinen könnte dazu führen,dass Ovechkin und Malkin eventuell nächstes Jahr gar nicht wechseln dürfen.Daran hab ich gar nicht mehr gedacht. Vielleicht erledigt sich dieses Problem sowieso von selbst,wenn nächstes Jahr alles in Wasser fällt.

eben.....entweder die Caps wollen Ovechkin, dann werden sie den pick nicht traden (außer vielleicht gegen Fleury ^^) oder sie wollen einen anderen, und dann braucht man nicht zu traden

Einen Deal mit den 1st Round Picks wie im letzten Jahr wird ja wohl kaum geben. Letztes Jahr war der Draft so gut besetzt da kam es auf eine Position nicht an. Außerdem was sollten die Pens den Caps bieten damit die ihren 1st Pick gegen den 2nd Pick tauschen . Aber erst einmal abwarten was sich noch ergibt und außerdem gab es ja schon oft hoch gehandelte Talente die dann doch nur durschnittlich spielten.

In addition, goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin acknowledged this season could have been his last in a Pens uniform. His $870,000 contract is up, and the team has three younger goaltenders it likely will use next season.

... im Grunde eine richtige Entscheidung, jedoch geht man auch ein großes Risiko ein. So ist Aubin mit seinen über 160 NHL Partien noch der Erfahrenste.
